Die Hard 5 Movie Exclusive Review

Bruce Willis is back as the badass cop, John McClane , with Die Hard 5. The movie has released today in India in a big way. John Moore has directed this instalment and Jai Courtney makes an entry into the series as John McClane’s estranged son Jack McClane. Let us see if Bruce Willis still has what it takes to cock a snook at the bad guys.
Story :
John McClane (Bruce Willis) comes to know that his estranged son Jack McClane is holed up in a Russian prison, facing serious criminal charges. He decides to head over to Russia, in a bid to try and help him. But once he goes there, John realises that there is more to Jack than he could have ever guessed.
Jack is on a mission to rescue the jailed political prisoner Komarov (Sebastian Koch) from his arch enemy Chagarin and Jack unintentionally gets mixed up in the mess. Chagarin is a dangerous foe who is willing to go to great lengths to kill Komarov in order to bury some incriminating evidence.
A dangerous game of chase begins, a chase that ultimately leads to the dreaded nuclear ghost town of Chernobyl. Father and son must now team up and fight against all odds to come out alive from the mess they find themselves in. How the do it is what Die Hard 5.0 is all about.
Plus Points :
Bruce Willis still has what it takes. When compared to Stallone and Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis has still got the pace and the looks to carry off a mega action entertainer on his own. His corny one liners will remind you of the good old days….days spent watching instalments of Terminator, Die Hard and Rocky in theaters.
Jai Courtney is decent as the estranged son Jack. Subtle hints are dropped about a possible change of guard for the Die Hard series. Perhaps, Jack McClane will take over from John McClane in the next instalment of this series.
The action sequences in the first half of the film are pretty good. The car chase sequence through the streets of Moscow has been shot well. Sure, it is a little outlandish..but hey, this is a film from the Die Hard franchise so what did you expect? If you are a fan of the legendary Mercedes G Wagen, you will have a whale of a time watching the car in action.
The first half has good pace and the emotional relationship between the far and the son has been captured well.
Minus Points :
The second half of the film is a big letdown and the climax is a way too far fetched, even for John McClane. The film loses its way once the scene shifts to Chernobyl and the ‘twist’ that comes up is all too predictable. Pace also slackens considerably before the climax action sequences start to unfold.
As with most big budget action entertainers, logic goes for a toss in the film. The way in which Bruce Willis dodges bullets and bad guys is a bit, errr… unbelievable.
Die Hard 4 worked so well because the plot had a certain depth to it and the action sequences had character. Those qualities are missing in version 5.0 .And Bruce Willis was the alpha dog in the old films. Here, he lets Jai Courtney take some of the credit and that is perhaps one of the reasons why you can’t really root for John McClane’s character.
Technical Aspects :
Jonathan Sela’s cinematography is neat and the action sequences look grand. Dan Zimmerman’s editing is good for most of the film but he drops the ball in the final stages. Action sequences are very good in the first half and a little ludicrous in the second half.
John Moore’s direction is not very satisfactory. This was the same guy who screwed up Max Payne, so let us not be too surprised.
Verdict :
Die Hard 5 aka A Good Day to Die Hard is a watchable action flick. It has the chases, the big explosions and the grand action sequences. Sadly, it lacks character and it is also let down by a bad second half. You may catch the flick on the big screen for Bruce Willis, but don’t go in expecting Die Hard 4 levels of entertainment.

Jabardasth Movie Update Review

Siddharth and Samantha’s ‘Jabardasth’ has released today across the world. The movie has been directed by Nandini Reddy and Bellamkonda Suresh is the producer. Thaman has composed the music. The film has been getting a decent buzz due to the presence of Samantha and due to Nandini Reddy’s previous film ‘Ala Modalaindi’.
Story :
The story of this film has been heavily inspired by the Bollywood hit ‘Band Bajaa Baraat’. Bairraju (Siddharth) is a perpetually bankrupt fellow who wants to get rich fast by trying his hand at various businesses. To escape from his creditors, he runs away to Bihar but his fortunes don’t change there either. He runs into trouble with the local strongman (Shayaji Shinde), who wants Bairraju to marry his sister. To escape from that scenario, Bairraju comes back to Hyderabad after a gap of 5 years.
He comes across Shreya (Samantha) at a wedding and secretly listens to her business plans. Shreya wants to set up a wedding planning agency and comes up with a scheme to learn the tools of the trade under top wedding planner Pinki Sharma. Armed with this information, Bairraju also approaches Pinki Sharma and reluctantly teams up with Shreya.
As time goes by, the duo decide to set up their own wedding planning company and they name it Shreyas Media. Business booms for a while but Bairraju’s extremely commercial nature creates differences between him and Shreya. A miffed Shreya kicks Bairraju out and he decides to start his own venture named ‘Bairraju Bampar Manazement’ (yes, that really is the spelling).
As competition between the two firms heats up, Saraswati ( Nithya Menon) comes in like a breath of fresh air into Bairraju’s life. Life looks rosy for Bairraju until fate throws in a cruel twist. What is that twist? Whom does Bairraju end up with? That forms the story of ‘Jabardasth’.
Plus Points :
Siddharth has tried his hand at mass comedy for the first time and he has tried his best. His dialogues in ‘butler english’ are funny. Samantha looks gorgeous as always and she has done a very good job in this film. Samantha has the power to steal hearts with her smile and she uses that to great effect in this movie.
The star of the film however is Nithya Menen. She is just brilliant as Saraswati and has commanding screen presence. In the song ‘Meghamala’, she looks just like veteran actress Savithri garu in Mayabazaar. The movie has good pace as long as Nithya is present and her character is what keeps the film alive.
Srihari, Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam, Thagubothu Ramesh, Telangana Sakunthala, Shayaji Shinde and Vennela Kishore entertain to a certain extent.
All the songs in the film have been shot very colourfully. Picturization is particularly good for ‘Meghamaala’ and ‘Ninnilage’ songs.
Minus Points :
If you have seen ‘Band Bajaa Barat’, you will find ‘Jabardasth’ to be extremely predictable.
The interval block and the subsequent twists in the romantic track between Siddharth and Samantha could have been handled more effectively. There is no emotional depth in this love track and that is why it fizzles out towards the end.
The climax block is a bit slow, melodramatic and cliched. Some of the comedy scenes are not very effective.
Srihari manages to bring a few laughs as Don Javed Bhai, but this episode just does not gel with the rest of the story. The concept of bringing two Hyderabadi wedding planners all the way to Malaysia, to organize the wedding of the Don’s sister, seems a bit far fetched.
Technical Aspects :
Cinematography of the movie is good. Editing could have been better in the second half, especially in the closing stages of the movie. Dialogues are humorous. Production values are ok.
Nandini Reddy has only partially succeeded as a director this time. She has conceived a superb character for Nithya Menen but the brilliance seen in ‘Ala Modalaindi’ is missing. Screenplay could have been better.
Verdict :
Siddharth’s fresh characterization, Samantha’s glamour and Nithya Menen’s sterling performance make ‘Jabardasth’ a one time watch. The film’s predictable story line and lack of emotional depth prevent it from rising above the ordinary.

Kai Po Che Movie Update Review

Abhishek Kapoor who had stormed Bollywood with the National Award winning film ‘Rock On’ is back with his latest film ‘Kai Po Che’. This film is based on the bestseller ’3 Mistakes of my life’ by Chetan Bhagat and this film stars newcomers Sushant Singh Rajput and Amit Sadh alongwith Raj Kumar Yadav in the lead roles. The film is scheduled to release on 22nd February and we are pleased to bring you the movie’s review much in advance. So let’s see how Kai Po Che is.
Story :
Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput), Omi (Amit Sadh) and Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav) are best friends from Ahmadabad who share strong bond of brotherhood. Ishaan is a notorious lad and a cricket genius who eats drinks, sleeps and dreams only of cricket. Omi is the disciplined son of a priest who likes his own space even in the company of his friends while Govind is a pure businessman and a math scholar who thinks of nothing apart from money.
One fine day, Govind falls in love with Ishaan’s progressive sister Vidya (Amrita Puri) and takes care to keep their relationship under wraps from everyone. Soon, the trio starts their own sports academy with some financial help from Omi’s politician uncle.
Everything goes smoothly until a huge earthquake rocks Ahmadabad and this is soon followed by a Hindu-Muslim riot that destroys their dreams. This tragic upheaval also causes a major conflict between the three friends and the rest of the film is how the trio overcomes their problems, more importantly will they remain true to each other and fulfill their big dreams.
Positive Points :
We have come across earlier movies on male bonding such as ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Rang De Basanti’ and ‘3 Idiots’; however, ‘Kai Po Che’ promises and delivers flawlessly. Speaking of performances in this movie, we can say all the actors have given their 100% to make this film a heartwarming one. The movie doesn’t make one realize that this is Sushant Singh Rajput’s debut in Bollywood since he gives a grueling performance in the intense scenes and shows off his comic timing in the fun sequences. Amit Sadh is another debutante who delivers a surprising performance in the film and is absolutely disciplined in the first half and equally intense in the second.
Raj Kumar Yadav who has already known for his good performances in earlier outings manages to give his best with this one. The actor plays out business-minded lad outstandingly while his innocence and discomfited passionate shots that are the most charming. Amrita Puri plays a bubbly progressive girl with ease and she is only predominant female presence in the film.
Other impactful characters include Bittu Mama, Omi’s politically driven uncle, and Ali, Ishaan’s gifted student, who have fleshed out their characters well.
Negative Points :
There is not much to talk about in this section and all we can say is that love sequences between Govind and Vidya were a little over-the-top and could have been more interestingly portrayed. Some of the sequences between the friends seem to be inspired from other Bollywood films like ‘Rang De Basanti’ and ’3 Idiots’. Also, Kai Po Che does not have the standard popcorn or masala entertainment quotient of regular Bollywood flicks.
Technical Aspects :
There are just three songs in the entire movie which ensure that you rarely get a chance to take your eyes off the screen. ‘Manja’ clearly explains the bond between the three friends, whereas ‘Shubhaarambh’ and ‘Meethi Boliyan’ connect well with the screenplay instead of acting as speed-breakers. The music is by Amit Trivedi set to lyrics by Swanand Kirkere and this will definitely have a lasting impact on the audiences.
The screenplay by Abhishek Kapoor and Chetan Bhagat proves to be both appealing and impactful. Deepa Bhatia’s editing is engaging and keeps the flow engaging. While the first half of the film depicts fun and bonding between the buddies, the second part is equally interesting with all the ups and downs in their respective lives which are interconnected amongst them.
The climax is thought-provoking and will have a lasting effect even after you exit the theaters. Anay Goswamy’s cinematography completely captures the spirit of the film. Director Abhishek Kapoor hits the bulls eye as he makes Chetan Bhagat’s novel look better in every way. He stews a heady concoction of cricket, politics, romance and brotherhood in the movie and comes up with a balanced dish of all the elements.
Verdict :
Overall, ‘Kai Po Che’ is a film which is written, directed and acted supremely well. Stunning performances, amazing story telling and some simple and realistic emotions make you connect intensely with the film. Kai Po Che will surely go on to win a lot of accolades and awards in Bollywood, and is a film which is a must watch for everyone.
