Pacific Rim Movie Review – Highly Entertaining

Guillermo del Torro, who is known for directing films like ‘Hellboy’ and ‘Blade 2′, has come up with a science fiction entertainer titled ‘Pacific Rim’. The movie has been produced by Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers is distributing it worldwide. The film’s trailers have managed to create a lot of buzz, with cutting edge special effects and thrilling action sequences. Can the film live up to the expectations? Let us take a look.
Story :
The plot of this film is pretty straightforward. Giant sea monsters known as Kaiju emerge out of a crevasse in the Pacific Ocean and threaten to destroy the human race. Faced with the threat of extinction, the humans fightback with advanced robots known as Jaegers. While the initial fightback is successful, the Jaegr are soon overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of the Kaiju.
Beckett (Charlie Hunnam) experiences a personal tragedy and quits the program. But he is convinced by Marshall Stacker (Iris Elba) to make a comeback and put up a last stand. The Jaegers require teams of human pilots who are connected via a neural bridge and Beckett teams up with Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi).
The Jaegr forces also discover an unlikely ally in Hannibal Chau, a black market dealer. How they repulse the Kaiju attacks to save mankind is what the story is all about.
Plus Points :
Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi have done a very good job. Iris Elba is effective as Stacker Pentecost. Ron Perlman shines through as Hannibal Chau.
The film has cutting edge visual effects and thrilling fight sequences. Entertainment quotient is extremely high and action movie lovers will have a great time. If you like the ‘Transformers’, you will love this movie.
For a sci-fi action entertainer, the film has good emotions. Characters have been etched nicely and the interactions between the lead actors will hook you.
The 3D effects are awe inspiring, especially during the climax sequence. Everything about this movie has a very grand feel.
Minus Points :
The plot of this movie is pretty straightforward and even slightly predictable.
As is the case with such sci-fi entertainers, some sequences seem extremely outlandish and unreal. Do not try to seek logical explanations for certain moments.
Technical Aspects :
Guillermo Navarro’s cinematography is top notch. Ramin Djawadi’s background score is good. The teams which worked on the VFX and CGI departments need to be commended for doing a superb job.
Guillermo del Torro has outdone himself with ‘Pacific Rim’. This is easily the most entertaining film to have come out from him. The film seeks to entertain action movie lovers and the director has succeeded in fulfilling that objective.
Verdict :
‘Pacific Rim’ is a very entertaining watch. Go with a gang of friends and have loads of fun as the Jaegers and Kaijus battle it out in 3D.

Fast & Furious 6 Review

Fast and Furious 6′ is the latest flick in the super hit ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise. The series is very popular in India and premiere shows were held today in many major towns, ahead of the film’s theatrical release on the 24th. The film has been directed by Justin Lin. Michelle Rodriguez makes a full fledged return to the series and the rest of the star cast is intact. Let us see how this movie is.
Story :
Toretto (Vin Diesel) and O’Connor (Paul Walker) lead a life of peace and happiness, after having retired from their notorious profession. Connor and Mia (Jordana Brewster) are blessed with a baby boy, much to the delight of the entire family.
But this happiness is short lived. DSS Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) comes into their lives with some shocking news. Torretto’s girlfriend Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), who was presumed to be dead, is seen in some very bad company. She has become a part of a dangerous gang headed by Shaw (Luke Evans), a gang that is hell bent on creating a special weapon that can cripple an entire nation.
An emotionally upset Torretto must now stop Shaw and Letty from creating this weapon. He must also find about Letty’s mysterious comeback. What happened to her? Why did she turn? More importantly, does she still love Toretto?
That is what this movie is all about
Plus Points :
Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson have delivered solid performances, as always. Vin Diesel has built up his physique and he looks quite menacing. Dwayne Johnson drew loud cheers from viewers whenever he bashed up bad guys.
Gina Carano and Michelle Rodriguez provide some brilliant entertainment in the film. They indulge in a very physical fist fight and this sequence has been shot quite well.
For car lovers, the movie is going to be a treat to watch. The Skylines, the Challengers, the Chargers – they are all there. The first half of the film is quite entertaining, with some nice humour and well choreographed chase sequences. Tyrese Gibson and Chris Bridges keep the humour alive throughout the film.
For an action flick, there is good emotional depth to the proceedings. The twist in closing stages of the film is good.
Minus Points :
The film’s climax sequence is quite a disappointment. The stunts are just way too unbelievable and downright foolish. For example, the runway in the climax sequence seems to have infinite length. Logic goes for a big toss in this film.
The second half does not have the same pace as that of the first half. Some of the stunt sequences in the second half are unnecessarily long.
Letty’s comeback has not been handled in a convincing way. I do not want to reveal the twists in the plot, but the reason given for the change in her behaviour is very cliched.
Technical Aspects :
Cinematography is good and Stephen Wendon has done an impressive job. Editing is neat. The VFX work is ok. Lucas Vidal’s background score is effective.
Justin Lin has done a good job in the first half. But one gets the impression that he got carried away in the second half.
Verdict :
Fast and Furious 6 is a decent time pass entertainer. Fast cars, beautiful women and nice action sequences – the film has them all. The first half is very good, but an almost ridiculous climax spoils the overall viewing experience a bit. Leave logic behind and you can have some fun.

Iron Man 3 Movie Review

Robert Downey Jr is back as Iron Man with the film ‘Iron Man 3′. The movie has released today in India, ahead of its theatrical release in the US. With sky high expectations and a pretty big release, the movie is expected to generate a good amount of revenue in India. Shane Black is the director of this instalment that has Ben Kingsley, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle in lead roles. Let us check out the film and see how it is.
Story :
Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) removes himself briefly from active duty after repulsing the alien invasion (repulsed by SHIELD in The Avengers). He suffers from panic attacks and his relationship with Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow) grows edgy. In the meantime, America is jolted by a series of violent terrorist attacks orchestrated by the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley).
Tony Stark wakes up to the threat and warns the Mandarin, who responds by destroying Stark’s house and most of his weapons/gadgets. A desperate Stark escapes to rural Tennessee and begins investigating the Mandarin. He has a 10 year old kid named Harley for company.
Tony Stark soon discovers that the Mandarin is using an experimental military program known as the Extremis for spreading mayhem. The Extremis program is devised to help crippled people get a new life, but it goes horribly wrong and ends up creating weapons of destruction.
Stark must use all of his resourcefulness to overcome the impossible odds and combat the Mandarin, to save America from his reign of terror.

Plus Points :

As always, Robert Downey Jr is very effective as the Iron Man. He brings humour and a certain arrogance into the character and that makes his performance very nice to watch. Gwyneth Paltrow is good, and she has a kick-ass moment of glory towards the end. Ben Kingsley is brilliant as the Mandarin and his characterisation is quite interesting.
The vulnerable side of Tony Stark has been showcased well in this movie. Downey Jr’s bonding with the 10 year old Harley is a treat to watch. Don Cheadle delivers a good performance yet again.
The film’s action sequences and visual effects are very nice. The climax sequence ,in particular, will be quite a feast for Iron Man fans.
As in all Iron Man films, sly humour and some romance are present in generous quantities. After the climax fight, Tony Stark does something quite interesting and this has implications for the future films in this franchise.
Minus Points :

There is more drama and less action in this edition when compared to previous Iron Man films. So if you go in expecting pop-corn action entertainment, like in The Avengers, you will be disappointed.
The Extremis episodes are a little bizarre to watch and if you ask me, quite unbelievable (even by Iron Man standards).
The film does not have the ‘WOW’ factor. The action sequences and the visual effects are very good, but not spectacular. The 3D effects are quite underwhelming. In fact, the film will be a lot more enjoyable in 2D than in 3D.

Technical Aspects :
John Toll’s cinematography is decent. Brian Tyler’s music is just about ok and not very awe inspiring. When it comes to 3D effects, the film disappoints. In fact, the action sequences don’t seem to have been configured for 3D effects. Perhaps, it was more of an afterthought.
Shane Black does a neat job as a director. Perhaps, he should have done a bit more to keep the entertainment quotient of the film higher.
Verdict :
‘Iron Man 3′ is a good watch, though it is certainly not spectacular by any means. Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow deliver flawless performances and the climax sequence will be a feast for Iron Man fans. But there is more drama in this edition than pure pop-corn action.

Oblivion Movie Review - Good Narration

Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman are the lead actors in ‘Oblivion’, a sci-fi drama which has been directed by Joseph Kosinski. Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough play the female leads in the movie and Claudio Miranda is the cinematographer. The film has released today in India in a reasonably big way, since Tom Cruise is quite popular here. Let us see how the movie is.
Story :
After the nuclear fallout resulting from a war between humans and the Alien life forms known as Scavs, Earth is deserted. The surviving humans move to Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. The humans leave behind Jack Harper (Tom Cruise), a drone maintenance specialist, and his companion Victoria (Andrea Riseborough).  Jack services the drones and assists his forces in the clean up operations on Earth. Though he leads a happy life with Victoria, he is plagued by vague memories of a past – a past that he cannot piece together.
Towards the end of his mission, Jack witnesses a spaceship’s crash and rescues a mysterious woman named Julia Rusakova (Olga Kurylenko) from the wreckage. Julia’s mysterious arrival changes many things in Jack’s life.
He finds out some shocking truths about the alien life forms known as Scavs and about himself. His life is thrown out of gear when he realises that he is being played in a high stakes game for the control of the earth’s resources.
What is that game? Who is Julia Rusakova? What is Jack Harper really up to?
Plus Points :
Tom Cruise gives a decent performance as Jack Harper. He does what is required of him and looks comfortable in the film’s action sequences. Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough look good.
The film has beautiful visuals and that is no surprise since Claudio Miranda is in charge of things. The Academy Award winner’s cinematography is a major asset for the movie. The portrayal of historical landmarks in a dilapidated state is pretty realistic.
The film has some very cool gadgets and futuristic equipment that will appeal to gadget lovers and tech enthusiasts.
There are one or two decent action sequences that have been shot well. Towards the end, Tom Cruise comes face to face with someone who is quite similar (Don’t want to reveal the twist) and that sequence has been conceived well.
Minus Points :
The plot has many similarities to films like ‘The Matrix’, ‘Independence Day’ and ‘Total Recall’. There is nothing new or innovative in the plot or in the film’s execution. For a big budget sci-fi movie featuring Tom Cruise, that is a bit of a letdown.
The climax sequence, in particular, will seem like a straight lift from ‘Independence Day’. Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough do not have very good roles in the film. Morgan Freeman is wasted in a badly written character.
Tom Cruise outwits the futuristic and highly advanced drones and other weapons systems quite easily and rather unconvincingly. Come on Tom, an advanced Alien race is definitely more intelligent that that.
If you go in looking for entertainment or loads of futuristic action sequences, you will be sorely disappointed. The pace of the film can get quite slow.
Technical Aspects :
I have already written about Claudio Miranda’s superb cinematography. Editing could have been better. Anthony Gonzalez and Joseph Trapanese have provided the background score and they have done a neat job.
Visual Effects are very good and deserve applause. Joseph Kosinski’s direction is a big letdown.
Verdict :
Despite some stunning visuals, cool gadgets and a big star cast, ‘Oblivion’ ends up as a surprisingly mediocre film. Too many similarities to popular sci-fi films of the past and a slow pace never let the film take off. Casual entertainment seeking viewers and action film lovers will be disappointed. You may give it a shot, but don’t go in with high expectations.

Die Hard 5 Movie Exclusive Review

Bruce Willis is back as the badass cop, John McClane , with Die Hard 5. The movie has released today in India in a big way. John Moore has directed this instalment and Jai Courtney makes an entry into the series as John McClane’s estranged son Jack McClane. Let us see if Bruce Willis still has what it takes to cock a snook at the bad guys.
Story :
John McClane (Bruce Willis) comes to know that his estranged son Jack McClane is holed up in a Russian prison, facing serious criminal charges. He decides to head over to Russia, in a bid to try and help him. But once he goes there, John realises that there is more to Jack than he could have ever guessed.
Jack is on a mission to rescue the jailed political prisoner Komarov (Sebastian Koch) from his arch enemy Chagarin and Jack unintentionally gets mixed up in the mess. Chagarin is a dangerous foe who is willing to go to great lengths to kill Komarov in order to bury some incriminating evidence.
A dangerous game of chase begins, a chase that ultimately leads to the dreaded nuclear ghost town of Chernobyl. Father and son must now team up and fight against all odds to come out alive from the mess they find themselves in. How the do it is what Die Hard 5.0 is all about.
Plus Points :
Bruce Willis still has what it takes. When compared to Stallone and Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis has still got the pace and the looks to carry off a mega action entertainer on his own. His corny one liners will remind you of the good old days….days spent watching instalments of Terminator, Die Hard and Rocky in theaters.
Jai Courtney is decent as the estranged son Jack. Subtle hints are dropped about a possible change of guard for the Die Hard series. Perhaps, Jack McClane will take over from John McClane in the next instalment of this series.
The action sequences in the first half of the film are pretty good. The car chase sequence through the streets of Moscow has been shot well. Sure, it is a little outlandish..but hey, this is a film from the Die Hard franchise so what did you expect? If you are a fan of the legendary Mercedes G Wagen, you will have a whale of a time watching the car in action.
The first half has good pace and the emotional relationship between the far and the son has been captured well.
Minus Points :
The second half of the film is a big letdown and the climax is a way too far fetched, even for John McClane. The film loses its way once the scene shifts to Chernobyl and the ‘twist’ that comes up is all too predictable. Pace also slackens considerably before the climax action sequences start to unfold.
As with most big budget action entertainers, logic goes for a toss in the film. The way in which Bruce Willis dodges bullets and bad guys is a bit, errr… unbelievable.
Die Hard 4 worked so well because the plot had a certain depth to it and the action sequences had character. Those qualities are missing in version 5.0 .And Bruce Willis was the alpha dog in the old films. Here, he lets Jai Courtney take some of the credit and that is perhaps one of the reasons why you can’t really root for John McClane’s character.
Technical Aspects :
Jonathan Sela’s cinematography is neat and the action sequences look grand. Dan Zimmerman’s editing is good for most of the film but he drops the ball in the final stages. Action sequences are very good in the first half and a little ludicrous in the second half.
John Moore’s direction is not very satisfactory. This was the same guy who screwed up Max Payne, so let us not be too surprised.
Verdict :
Die Hard 5 aka A Good Day to Die Hard is a watchable action flick. It has the chases, the big explosions and the grand action sequences. Sadly, it lacks character and it is also let down by a bad second half. You may catch the flick on the big screen for Bruce Willis, but don’t go in expecting Die Hard 4 levels of entertainment.
